We Protest against North Korea’s Nuclear Testing, and Demand the Immediate End to the Nuclear and Missile Programs and the Sincere Effort for Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula

February 12, 2013

Masakazu Yasui
Secretary General, Japan Council against A and H Bombs (Gensuikyo)

Today, North Korea announced through its central news agency that it conducted the third underground nuclear testing, following ones in 2006 and 2009. We protest against it, as it endangers peace and security in Northeast Asia, challenging all the effort in the international community for totally banning nuclear weapons. This kind of conduct can never be justified by any pretense whatsoever.

The UN Security Council resolution 1874 demanded that “DPRK not conduct any further nuclear test or any launch using ballistic missile technology”, and warned that it “take significant action in the event of a further DPRK launch or nuclear test”. North Korea, as a member of the international community, should accept the resolution. It should immediately end the nuclear and missile development and begin sincere effort for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

We also urge all parties concerned to make every effort to resolve the problems peacefully through the resumption of the six-party talks for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. We also urge the Japanese government to stop playing up the use of the “right to collective self-defense”, which violates the provision of the Japanese Constitution, and stand instead for the effort for a total ban on nuclear weapons, as well as for the peaceful resolution of the problem.
