A Statement in Support of High-Level Talks Between the U.S. and North Korea

관리자 (2013/06/22 18:57)

On June 16, 2013, the government of North Korea (the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) proposed high-level, bilateral talks to the Obama Administration.

Considering that the proposed agenda items of the talks -- de-escalation of military tensions, transition from armistice to peace mechanism, denuclearization -- reflect the desires of all concerned to bring about a permanent peace in the Korean Peninsula, we, the Korean-Americans living in the U.S., call for the Obama Administration to move positively on this development and arrange high-level talks.

As we witnessed a flurry of diplomatic activities recently -- a high-level Japanese government delegation's visit to Pyongyang on May 14, North Korean special envoy's visit to Beijing on May 22, Pyongyang's proposal for inter-Korea high-level talks on June 6, a high-level DPRK-China strategic discussions in Beijing on June 19 -- the latest proposal to the U.S. by North Korea seems to be a genuine part of an overall effort towards engagement with concerned parties aimed at resolving contentious issues via dialog.

Therefore, as it is our desire to see permanent peace in our homeland, security in the United States where we live, and denuclearization in Northeast Asia and throughout the globe, we call for Washington to move forward on this proposal.
