Statement on Behalf of Gensuikyo

At the Closing of the 9th NPT Review Conference: Statement on Behalf of Gensuikyo

Let Us Further Develop Momentum to Make the 70th Anniversary of the Atomic Bombing a Milestone for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons

May 23, 2015

Hiroshi TAKA, Representative Director
Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs (Gensuikyo)

The Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conference closed without a final document.

Despite worldwide increasing calls for the previous agreements of the NPT to be achieved, due to the opposition from a handful of Nuclear Weapon States, the Conference failed to yield an outcome to reflect these calls.

However, we should note that in the past five years a call for a total ban on nuclear weapons and their elimination has grown significantly. In the NPT Review Conference, the call for an international convention to prohibit nuclear weapons was reflected in the chair’s summa y of discussions on nuclear disarmament at the Main Committee I. This development is backed by the current of an overwhelming majority that demands the elimination of nuclear weapons, focusing on humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons.

There is no doubt that this trend will have great influence to move international politics further forward in the future.

We have played a significant role in encouraging these efforts for a total ban and the elimination of nuclear weapons and in raising the voices of civil society through carrying out the signature campaign in support of the “Appeal for a Total Ban on Nuclear Weapons”, organizing the New York actions on the eve of the NPT Review Conference and sending a large delegation of our organization to join it.

Achieving a world without nuclear weapons is a vital task for the survival of humankind. It will continue to be a focal issue in international politics. We believe that public opinion and civil society, particularly in the nuclear-armed states and those depend on "nuclear umbrella", should play an even greater role. Now the world is paying attention to the 2015 World Conference against A and H Bombs to be held in the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We pledge to do our utmost to make it a great success as a next springboard for achieving a world without nuclear weapons.

We Protest against Forcible Enactment of War Laws and Demand Their Abrogation
